last week i had the privilege of helping out with the Cambridge Academy 3rd grade art project. every year, each class makes an art project to be sold at the annual cambridge academy auction. this year, the 3rd grade is making a clay pottery bowl. a very talented artist volunteered her time to help with the project and she made sure that the kids were involved not only in constructing the project, but also in every step of the decision making progress. first they voted on the type of bowl they wanted to make….one with a stand or without. then they voted on whether it would be striped or swirly. next came the decision on whether it would be one color or two. then what color(s) would it be? it was fun to be there to document the whole process and to watch a lump of clay be turned in to a beautiful art piece by 13 pairs of tiny hands. this is only part one of the project. in about a month the class will get to see the bowl after it’s been fired and then paint it. i’ll be there for that fun too so stay tuned…this is going to be one beautiful art project!
