recently i had the pleasure of traveling with my family to the beautiful island of roatan, honduras.  roatan is small bay island off the main land of honduras.  it is known for it’s barrier reef which happens to be the 2nd largest in the world, second only to the “great barrier reef” in australia.  so naturally roatan is a hot spot for divers and snorkelers alike.  but aside from the underwater scenes, roatan has much to offer for those seeking rest and relaxation.  the white sandy beaches of west bay and the crystal clear blue water surrounding the island are just two of my favorite things about roatan.

while roatan frequently features perfect sunny days; we were there when hurricane ernesto rolled across the island.  and although the hurricane didn’t do much for my tan, it did allow me to produce some amazing images.  below are some of the photographs i was able to capture during both sunny, and rain laden days.  i hope you enjoy them.

happy friday everyone!  this year i’m starting a new project, fine art friday, with some of my fellow photographers over at the 4 the love of focus (4tlof) forum.  4tlof is a forum where professional women photographers come together online to discuss business and marketing topics, as well as find inspiration and friendship.  there are some fabulous ladies on this forum and and you’ll see just what i mean by following our blog circle around to view each photo.

so let’s get started here!  first off, what is fine art photography?  well, fine art can be described as photographs that are created to fulfill the creative vision of the artist.  that’s a pretty broad definition so think of it this way…if you could imagine hanging it on your wall, then it could be considered fine art.  not to say you’d want to hang all pieces of fine art on your wall, considering we all have different likes and dislikes when it comes to art.  but i think that helps you to get the idea.

here is my photo for the january edition of fine art friday.  i’m currently in the throws of co-chairing the mid-winter ball for the self regional healthcare foundation and this year’s theme is “a seaside soiree”.  as hard as i may try, i just can’t seem to get all things beachy out of my head.  so i found it only fitting that i photograph this beautiful sea shell that i discovered while diving in turks and caicos last summer.  it wasn’t nearly this beautiful when i saw it on the ocean floor…but after many cleaning treatments, it’s full beauty has been restored.  i hope you enjoy it.  and don’t forget to click on through the blog circle to see what others have envisioned as fine art.  you can start by checking out Evie Curley Greensboro NC Child and Family Photographer.

it’s been a few weeks since i lasted joined my fellow photographers on our project 52 on the bloom forum…but i’m posting this week and happy to be back in the loop!  the theme for this week’s project is “stacks/piles”.  my daughter visited the library today in search of a book for her halloween book report.  the photo i’ve captured here shows about half of her selections…if only she liked reading the books as much as she liked picking them out!

my daughter went back to school this week.  she started 3rd grade at cambridge academy.   since kindergarten my daughter has been a cambridge cougar and we love this school and all the families that make it so special.   the first day of school is one of my favorites.  so many emotions…excitement, anxious anticipation, shyness, joy, and everything else you can think of rolled in to one day each year.  i spent a few minutes capturing my daughter and her school mates as they embarked on this year’s adventure.  i hope you enjoy the photos!

it’s sunday and time for the Project 52 on the Bloom Forum!   it’s been two weeks since i last posted a project 52 photo so i’m anxious to be back in the loop!   i’m partnered up with 14 other fabulous photographers for a great year long project. we post each week on sunday with a new theme. this week’s theme is “night or low light”.

about two months ago my family from florida came to visit and we had a great week.  one of the many fun activities we did was to take all the kids to the drive in movie theater.   there’s nothing better than watching a movie in the back of a pick up truck lined with air mattresses, blankets and popcorn!  we all had a great time.  and i had fun capturing the experience with my trustee nikon d700.  thank goodness for it’s ability to work in low light b/c it got dark quick…and i wasn’t done shooting!  i hope you enjoy these photos, i know we all enjoyed the night

as i sat in my office working this last week, i looked out the window and saw my daughter running through the sprinklers without a care in the world.  it reminded me of the kind of fun that kids have had for generations.  the kind without tv, video games, ipods and computers.  just good old fashioned fun!  so after i grabbed my camera and snapped a few pics, i decided to process them as they might have looked if i’d taken them in the days before digital cameras, photoshop and computers.  funny that i used all those things to try and produce an image that looks like i used none of them…ironic i guess.  anyway, enjoy

america’s independence day gave me a great opportunity to photograph some light flare in the form of fireworks.  what fun!

i wish i could say that i went to some amazing site to photograph the most beautiful landscape i could imagine…but it’s summer and my daughter is out of school and i have family visiting from out of state…so that wasn’t happening this week but i still think i have something great for you!  this the the the patriot golf course in my neighborhood of grand harbor.  i had the good fortune to catch this amazing sunset over the 18th hole.  such a site to see…and such a blessing to have this in my backyard!

i love photographing flowers but i just don’t do it very often…so i was super excited for this week’s theme!  this is a beautiful day lily that is growing down the road from my house.  it’s of the “giant” variety and i love it’s peachy color.  we have some of these that are supposed to grow next to our driveway…but the deer eat them like candy and we’ve never actually seen them bloom.  looking at this flower makes me even more annoyed at those stinkin deer!

the image i chose for this week is of a simple staircase.  but in it’s simplicity of lines i find beauty!  this staircase is nothing but lines…horizontal lines, vertical lines and angled lines for the handrail.  it’s fun to take an ordinary object and shoot it in a whole new way.  thanks for stopping by
