There is something extra special about photographing a family I’ve worked with many times before. Each session feels familiar, but it also captures a brand-new season—a little reminder of how much can change between one set of photographs and the next. We scheduled this updated family session during the Fourth of July week, so red, white and blue felt like the perfect choice for their outfits. Because this family has been in front of my camera before, the session felt comfortable and easy from the beginning. We created the polished family portraits everyone wants, but we also made room for smaller groupings, individual photographs and the natural moments that happen in between. That is one of my favorite things about photographing families over the years. The faces may be familiar, but the relationships, personalities and dynamics continue to grow and change. Every session adds another piece to the family’s story—and gives them updated photographs that reflect who they are right now. I’m so grateful when families trust me to photograph them once, but being invited back again and again means even more. It’s a privilege to document their lives through so many different seasons and create beautiful photographs they can enjoy in their homes for years to come. If it has been a while since your family’s last photo session, this may be the perfect time for an update. You don’t need a milestone or special occasion. Sometimes, being together is reason enough.
